The Movie Brats film movement of the late 1960s and 1980s marked a shift in Hollywood, as young directors pushed boundaries with personal storytelling and experimental techniques. Their films often explored taboo subjects and challenged traditional studio control, reshaping the industry. For this project, I wanted to reflect that unconventional spirit. I projected typography onto a pillow, photographed it, and digitally distorted the image to create the final effect. The goal was to make the type feel like smoke, evoking the hazy atmosphere of an ’80s nightclub while embracing the experimental, hands-on approach that defined the era’s filmmaking techniques.

Projector Text Distortion Experiment
I experimented with projection to create a distorted, flowing type treatment for the words “Movie Brats.” After setting the text in a simple serif font, I projected it onto different surfaces around my room to explore how the form could change in space. The most interesting distortion came from projecting onto a pillow, where the texture and curves created a soft, warped effect. I photographed the results and further refined the type in Photoshop to use in the final design.
